Last Day of the Amateur Classic

Stacie McDavid, Fort Worth, Tex., scored 219 points on DMAC Piccolo Pete, by WR This Cats Smart, to top the third and last day of Amateur/Amateur Unlimited Classic competition, in the 2019 NCHA Kit Kat Sugar Super Stakes. Von Sutten, Weatherford, Tex., won the three-day, 334-entrant go-round, with 221 points scored Monday on Superey, by Dual Rey. German Lugo, Gainesville, Tex., was second with 220 points on Mamas Stylish Sophie, by One Time Pepto.

Sutten, Lugo, and McDavid are all Amateur Unlimited entrants. Will Bushaw, entered in both the Amateur and Amatuer Unlimited divisions, is the high-scoring Amateur with 219 points on Bittersweet, by Metallic Cat. Amateur Unlimited riders with scores of 214 will advance to the Amateur Unlimited Semi-Finals on Friday, April 19, which will be followed by the Amateur Finals, for Amateur go-round contenders with 214 points or higher.

Stacie McDavid, the NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame earner of $990,971, won the 1997 NCHA Super Stakes Amateur riding Smart Little Tex LTE $56,881, by Smart Little Lena. In 2001, McDavid was a Super Stakes Non-Pro finalist riding Lenas Smart Missy LTE $103,840, by Smart Little Lena, who she had shown to place sixth in the 2000 NCHA Futurity Amateur Finals. Little Chantilly LTE $42,455, by Smart Little Lena, carried McDavid to place eighth in the 2003 Super Stakes Non-Pro Finals, as did CR Lucys Playboy LTE $95,802, by Pepto Rio Playboy, in 2016.

Six-year-old DMAC Piccolo Pete LTE $147,672, was reserve champion of the West Texas Futurity at three under Clint Allen, who has shown her as an Open finalist in eleven limited age events. McDavid has shown her successfully in Amateur Unlimited and Non-Pro events, as well, including the 2019 Bonanza Classic where the pair placed third. Last year, McDavid and DMAC Piccolo Pete won the Bonanza Classic Amateur Unlimited and claimed reserve in the Breeders Invitational 5/6 Amateur Unlimited. They also earned money as Semi-Finalists in the Super Stakes Classic Non-Pro and Classic Amateur Unlimited.

The NCHA Kit Kat Sugar Super Stakes continues on Wednesday, April 17, with the first of two days of Super Stakes Amateur/Amateur Unlimited go-round competition.
